Medicare Advantage plans also known as Medicare Part C are available for beneficiaries that have both Part A & Part B. Medicare Advantage plan are HMOs, PPOs, PFFSs or SNPs. HMO - Health Maintence Organization Under this type of plan, you work mainly with your (in-network) primary care physician. The PCP oversees your healthcare. If you would need to see a specialist, your PCP would issue a referral for the specialist. Generally all service must be received in-network. PPO - Preferred Provider Organization This plans allows you to see in-network and out-of-network providers. This is a great option for someone who travels a lot or is a snowbird in another state. Because of this added "freedom", the copays are usually higher than with a HMO. PFFS - Private Fee For Service These plans may or may not be available in all areas. There is usually a network, but you can use out-of-network providers as long as they accept the payment terms set by the insurance carrier. The provider can decide to accept and see you on a case-by-case status. SNP - Special Needs Plans are available for those that have both Medicare and Medicaid as well as plans for certain Medical conditions like Diabetes or Chronic Heart issues.
